Far from perfect

Stanton Coaching: February 2024

If you sound like this more often than you’d like:

“I’ll launch my business just as soon as…”

“I’ll talk to my boss, but first…”

“I’ve always wanted to do that, it’s just not the right time”

This month’s newsletter will feel like a (gentle) kick in the behind.

This month’s reading time: ~3 minutes

  1. Practicing what I preach: Change is on the horizon!

  2. Spheres of control: Accept reality to clear the way

  3. Fund your next Amazon purchase: Rewarding your referrals

1. Practicing what I preach: Change is on the horizon!

Last year was ripe with experimentation.

I coached a ton, tested different offerings, and played around with my messaging as I learned about who I wanted to support.

I left the corporate world for start-ups and self-employment in a way that felt inevitable, instead of terrifying.

I worked with incredible clients to move their careers forward, even in the face of complex challenges.

This year is about putting all those learnings together to find consistency and growth in my business.

This is, of course, a process in and of itself as I evolve my brand, collateral, and outreach strategy.

It looks like:

  • Making slow, deliberate changes - as opposed to a one-time relaunch

  • Ensuring that my choices are values-based instead of fear-based

  • Taking consistent action without waiting for perfection

The reality is, my business will constantly evolve.

That’s a good thing.

I need to continue executing on my priorities, while managing the inevitable change that comes with growing a young venture.

It’s a fun dance, and I’m learning the steps as I go.

You’ll hear more about this new chapter for Stanton Coaching as it is written, but, for now, I’m excited to share that:

  • I’m shifting from 90% working for a start-up, 10% working for myself »» 40% working for a start-up, 60% working for myself (!)

  • I’m repositioning more towards leadership coaching for new managers and first-time founders (but career changes, I still got you!)

  • I’m open for business and eager to support you!

This month’s newsletter wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be, and that’s more than okay -

After all, there’ll be many more where this came from.

2. Spheres of control: Accept reality to clear the way

A huge source of feeling ‘stuck’ - in your career, your business, or your personal life - is obsessing over things outside of your control.

You see a big, giant, stone wall in front of you with no way over or around it.

You stand there, staring up at it, feeling powerless.

You ruminate over how unfair it is that this giant wall is impeding upon your plans.

You stare at it until you’re red in the face, eventually turning around with your head down, planning to try again later.

However, if you looked up just a little, you’d see other people with grappling hooks and hammers, doing whatever they can to make way.

You’d see people standing on each other’s shoulders, helping each other over.

You might even see wood that you can use to start building your own ladder.

It’s rare that the path in front of you will ever be clear of roadblocks.

It’s rare that any plan will go off without a hitch.

In those moments, you don’t ignore the wall completely - you size it up, evaluate your resources, and make progress anyway.

I know it’s hard - that wall is intimidating.

But if you wait around for it to crumble, you could be waiting forever.

If you need help breaking down the giant wall in front of you - try this exercise to separate what you can and cannot control.

You don’t need perfect next steps - just effective ones.

3. Fund your next Amazon purchase: Rewarding your referrals

Know someone who is looking to elevate their impact as a leader?

Send them my way, and I’ll send you a $50 Amazon gift card as a token of my gratitude if they sign-up with me.

They can schedule a 45-minute consult call to see if working with me could be a good fit (and, yes, you can refer yourself).

With gratitude,

Alex
