How to debate better

Hint: It's not by yelling or being stubborn

Today’s newsletter is short and sweet because:

  • It’s already late (according to me)

  • I’m on a plane (1st of 4 over 4 days!)

  • Simple is better (right?)

Read on to learn how to debate
(without sounding like a jerk)

Est. read time: < 2 minutes

Benefits of a good debate:

  • Build positive relationships: Empower others by showing them they belong - that their ideas are valued.

  • Understand a problem deeply: Uncover hidden risks, potential barriers, and unexpected synergies
    (brutal word, I know).

  • Improved innovation and outcomes: This time around and in the future (people will be more willing to speak up)

It made sense in my head

3 Steps to Debate Well:

Use the ‘Assertive Inquiry’ approach to get yourself heard, refine your own perspective, and harness your team’s collective power.

#1: Advocate (yes, you are allowed)

  • Share how you see the situation

  • Communicate clearly and simply:

    • Share your bottom-line first

    • Then 2-3 supporting points

#2: Inquire (and mean it)

  • Ask how others see things differently

  • LISTEN to understand
    (not to counterattack)

  • Be conscious of your body language

#3: Summarize (their ideas)

  • Playback what you heard

  • Ask if your interpretation is accurate

  • WAIT you’re still not sending it back yet

#4: Debate (the gaps)

  • Explain gaps in your understanding

  • Ask for more info to support their views

  • Reflect on what you’re learning together

This isn’t about making everyone happy.

It’s about creating open dialogue to get to the best answer.

This only works if you’re ready and willing to:

  • Hear others

  • Manage your emotions

  • Let go of the need to be right

If you have trouble with those - start there.
